Energy Policy Advisor

As an Energy Policy Advisor, you’ll play a key role in shaping the future of clean energy by developing, analysing, and advising on policies that govern offshore wind farms and their energy storage zones. Your work will focus on hydrogen storage, gas backup units, and large battery facilities, helping ensure energy from offshore wind farms is stored and distributed in line with government regulations and climate goals. You’ll work with governments, utility companies, engineers, and community leaders to design policies that promote safe, efficient, and fair energy use. Your advice influences everything from funding and permits to environmental safety and market regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Design and recommend policies for safe, low-carbon energy storage.
• Advise on how to fund hydrogen and battery facilities.
• Ensure projects meet UK environmental and planning regulations.
• Review how offshore wind energy connects to local grids.
• Work with community leaders, engineers, and government agencies.
• Write reports and policy briefings for ministers and company boards.

What You’ll Most Likely Be Doing:
• Analysing new energy policy proposals.
• Attending stakeholder meetings.
• Studying reports on hydrogen and battery safety.
• Consulting engineers and project managers.
• Responding to public concerns about offshore projects.
• Advising ministers or directors about energy law and investment needs.

Essential Skills

Analytical thinking and research
• Excellent communication and writing.
• Understanding of UK climate laws and energy policy.
• Data interpretation and impact analysis.
• Confidence working with the government and public sector.
• Awareness of renewable energy technologies.

Qualifications and Training

GCSEs:
• English (for report writing and communication).
• Maths (for data analysis and economic modelling).
• Geography or Citizenship (for understanding public systems).

Post-16 Options:
• A-Levels in Politics, Geography, Economics, Maths, Environmental Science.
• BTECs in Public Services or Environmental Sustainability.

Higher Education:
• Degrees in Energy Policy, Public Policy, Environmental Economics or International Relations or relevant apprenticeships with policy placements.

This is the most common pathway. Degrees help you build skills in analysis, communication, and understanding energy systems.
Some important A-level subjects are:
• Politics or Government (for understanding law and public systems).
• Geography or Environmental Science (for understanding sustainability and land use).
• Maths or Economics (for handling data, budgets, and market impact).
A few recommended degrees:
• Politics and International Relations - This degree teaches you how governments make decisions about energy and climate change. You’ll learn about laws, diplomacy, and
global energy challenges, like how the UK works with other countries to cut carbon and build clean energy systems, especially if you go into this with an environmental focus. As an Energy Policy Advisor, you’ll use what you’ve learned to help shape big-picture plans like deciding where to build hydrogen storage units or how to share wind power with other countries. You'll help the government or businesses write energy laws, make agreements, and plan future projects. This course can be accessed at Swansea University which requires you to have at least a BBB at A-level.
• Economics and Sustainable Development - This course combines money and the environment. You’ll study how governments fund clean energy projects, how storage
markets work, and what makes a good investment for things like battery storage or wind energy. As an Energy Policy Advisor, you’ll help the government or energy companies decide how much to spend on hydrogen storage or battery systems. You'll learn to compare different options, look at long-term savings, and make sure the public gets value for money. This course can be found at the University of Sussex, which has the requirements of ABB at A-levels.
As for post-graduate degrees:
• Energy and Environmental Policy - You’ll learn how governments plan energy systems, regulate industry, and promote renewable technologies like offshore wind and hydrogen storage. You’ll also study UK and international law, climate policy, and community engagement. This master's degree can be found at the University of Sussex, which requires you to have at least a 2:2 undergraduate honours degree.

Level 4 Policy Officer Apprenticeship - Where you’ll work in government departments or energy consultancies and learn how policies for clean energy, like offshore wind and hydrogen storage, are developed and communicated. You’ll gain real experience in writing briefings, researching laws, and advising on strategy, which are skills that directly link to helping shape how energy is stored and used across the UK.
• Level 6 Environmental practitioner - In this apprenticeship, you’ll work directly with energy companies, government bodies, or environmental consultancies to understand how policies for clean energy, like offshore wind, hydrogen storage, and carbon reduction, are developed. You'll learn to assess the environmental impacts of energy projects, conduct policy research, and assist in developing strategies to reduce emissions while improving energy systems. By studying topics like sustainable energy practices, environmental regulations, and climate policy, you’ll gain the expertise needed to advise on national energy strategies and policies.
