Compliance Officer

As a Compliance Officer working in offshore wind, you play a key role in ensuring that companies meet all the necessary regulations, standards, and legal requirements, particularly around health and safety, environmental protection, and energy industry rules.

In the Storage & Industrial zone, your work helps ensure hydrogen and battery storage systems adhere to UK and international regulations, preventing environmental risks and promoting public trust in renewable energy.

Key Responsibilities

In the field of renewable energy, a compliance officer makes sure that organisations, operations, and projects adhere to all applicable environmental laws, rules, and industry standards. In addition to ensuring that projects like offshore wind farms or hydrogen storage facilities comply with local, national, and international regulatory frameworks. They also seek to reduce risks and safeguard the environment.

Compliance officers, who frequently carry out audits, examine legal papers, and offer advice on regulatory matters, are essential to upholding sustainability and moral behaviour.
• Reviewing processes for legal and environmental compliance
• Ensuring hydrogen safety protocols and offshore storage rules are followed.
• Preparing documentation and reporting for audits.
• Working with engineers to develop safe and compliant systems.
• Advising managers on new rules or changes in regulations.
• Liaising with environmental and energy regulatory bodies.
• Investigating any legal breaches and managing resolution procedures.

As for what you’ll most likely be doing:
• Monitor and interpret energy and safety legislation.
• Carry out compliance audits and inspections.

• Prepare compliance reports and risk assessments.
• Develop and review policies and procedures.
• Organise staff training in compliance matters.
• Work closely with project managers and engineers.
• Handle investigations and liaise with regulators if breaches occur.
• Help implement systems to track and maintain legal standards.

• Analytical and problem-solving ability.
• Attention to detail and risk awareness.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• IT and data management proficiency.
• Organisational and planning ability.
• Teamwork and ability to collaborate across departments.
• Confidence to challenge non-compliance.

Qualifications and Training

GCSEs:
Minimum 5 GCSEs grade 4/C or above, including: English, Maths and Science.
A Levels / BTECs:
3 A levels ranging from BBB to AAA in relevant subjects such as:
• A Levels in Business, Law, Politics or Geography.
• BTECs in either Business or Law.

You could then go on to university and study for a degree in Law or Environmental Science.
Alternatively, you could also pursue a degree apprenticeship after A levels and work your way up to becoming a Compliance Officer or Regulatory Affairs Specialist within the renewable energy sector.

When it comes to becoming a Compliance Officer in the offshore wind energy and storage sector, most employers will expect you to have a degree or postgraduate qualification in a subject like law, environmental science, energy policy, compliance, or engineering management. All depending on what your chosen focus within compliance will be and here would be more legal and environmental.

Entry requirements to get into university typically include:
3 A Levels at grades BBB to A*AA
Most courses will prefer subjects like Law, Geography, Environmental Science, Biology, Chemistry, Business Studies, or Politics.

As for the degree, you could take a course in subjects such as:
• Environmental Science - This subject gives you a solid understanding of how natural systems interact with human activity. You’ll learn how to assess environmental impacts, conduct audits, and understand how energy projects like wind or hydrogen storage must comply with environmental laws and regulations. You'll also explore areas like pollution control, sustainability, and environmental monitoring. All key knowledge areas for compliance roles in the renewable energy sector. This course can be found at universities such as East Anglia, which require you to have at least ABB at A level, which includes subjects like - Geography, Geology, Mathematics, Economics, Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science or Physics.

• Law - A law degree equips you with deep knowledge of regulations, legislation, and enforcement, which are vital for a Compliance Officer who ensures companies follow national and international legal standards. If you specialise in environmental or energy law, you’ll focus on areas such as permitting, planning law, environmental liability, and the legal frameworks that govern renewable energy projects. This course can be found at universities such as Swansea and Cardiff University. These courses require you to achieve an ABB at A-level.

However, while a bachelor’s degree is often enough for entry-level compliance roles, a master’s or postgraduate qualification can open doors to higher-level positions and specialist areas. Especially in offshore renewables, where understanding of energy regulation, sustainability frameworks, and environmental policy is essential. Some of these postgraduate qualifications you could take are:

• Environmental Law and Sustainable Development - This course focuses on the legal frameworks governing environmental protection and sustainable development, including energy regulations, climate change policies, and environmental compliance. It covers advanced topics such as international environmental law, energy law, environmental impact assessments, and how to manage the legal aspects of large-scale energy projects like offshore wind or hydrogen storage. This course is ideal for those pursuing compliance officer roles, as it equips graduates with the expertise to navigate complex regulations and ensure projects comply with local, national, and international laws. This can be found at universities such as, SOAS University of London and their requirements are a good 2:1 or higher in either Law, Environmental Science, or Geography.
These postgraduate qualifications are ideal if you're aiming to pursue a career in the offshore renewable energy sector, particularly in roles that involve navigating complex regulatory environments, ensuring compliance with environmental laws, and addressing sustainability challenges.
