environmental harm. You’ll typically work for a consultancy and be involved in projects such as
environmental impact assessments, pollution surveys, and renewable energy developments.
Key Responsibilities
Environmental consultants assess and reduce the ecological impact of offshore wind power, hydrogen
storage, and battery infrastructure. In Zone 3 (Storage & Industrial), this includes:
• Evaluating environmental risks of hydrogen production and battery sites
• Ensuring offshore-to-onshore energy distribution complies with environmental law
• Reducing impacts on marine ecosystems, coastal zones, and protected species
• Advising on carbon footprint, pollution controls, land contamination, and flood risk
They often work closely with engineers, planners, regulators and community stakeholders.
What You’ll Do:
• Conduct Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) on hydrogen and battery storage sites
• Run field and desk surveys (e.g., pollution levels, wildlife habitats, coastal erosion)
• Analyse and interpret environmental data using GIS software
• Advise developers on how to meet marine and industrial environmental laws
• Help design mitigation strategies for offshore-to-onshore transmission
• Review previous land use for onshore substation or hydrogen facility construction
• Write technical reports and present findings to the government or clients

Or you can work through an apprenticeship and gain practical experience that’ll be very valuable in your quest to be an environmental consultant.
Either route will take similar amounts of effort and time, it’s up to you what you think will work the best for you, whether that is working on the job as an apprentice or learning through the education system.
You'll usually need a degree or postgraduate qualification in environmental science, environmental
studies or environmental sustainability.
You'll usually need:
• 3 A levels ranging from BBB to AAB in relevant subjects such as geography, biology or chemistry
for a degree that’ll help towards being an environmental consultant.
• A degree in a relevant subject for postgraduate study
As for the degree, you could take a degree in subjects such as:
• Environmental science – in places such as Southampton or Manchester.
• Earth sciences/Ecology – in places such as Portsmouth or Exeter.
• Environmental engineering or management – in places such as Brighton.
• Geology or geophysics – in places such as Cardiff or Liverpool.
Some consultants also have postgraduate qualifications:
For example, Bristol University - requires you to have an honours degree of 2:2 or above. This
course may be generally suitable for graduates of degrees from any academic background, but they
particularly want you to have a degree in social sciences, physical sciences, environmental studies,
geography or planning and engineering.
Alongside Leeds University - They require you to have a bachelor's degree with a 2:1 (hons) in a
natural, environmental, physical, geographical, management or social science subject.
You can apply for a Level 6 Environmental Practitioner degree apprenticeship.
You can also apply for an Environmental Conservation Level 2 apprenticeship.
