Key Responsibilities
• Environmental inspection: conducting routine inspections of port and transport activities and ensuring they meet environmental standards.
• Reporting and documentation: preparing detailed environmental inspection reports and keeping records of environmental information such as emissions and waste handling.
• Pollution prevention and control: monitoring factors that influence pollution and working out ways to keep them at a minimum.
• Sustainability monitoring: support the implementation of sustainability policies in port operations.

Essential Skills
• Environmental regulations knowledge: In-depth knowledge of UK environmental laws and regulations.
• Attention to detail: Ability to notice the relevant factors during site inspection and monitoring.
• Reporting: Strong skills in preparing detailed inspection reports and environmental assessments.
• Risk assessment: Ability to conduct environmental risk assessments and recommend preventative methods.
• Communication skills: Ability to communicate findings to other people working at the port, such as port operators and project teams.
Qualifications and Training
A degree in environmental science, marine biology, environmental engineering, geography or environmental management. A masters degree in Environmental management or marine environmental protection is optional but useful.
Starting out in roles that require less experience such as an environmental technician, junior compliance officer or environmental monitoring assistant will allow you to gain the necessary work experience.
The Environmental Health Practitioner Level 6 Apprenticeship is an opportunity to gain work experience whilst also earning qualifications that are equal to a degree, this apprenticeship is a good opportunity for anyone looking to go into the environmental health field.
NEBOSH environmental management certificate, IOSH managing safely, ISO 14001 – Environmental management systems, spill response or marine pollution control training.
