Health and Safety Officers

A Health and Safety Officer is a professional responsible for ensuring that activities across site operations comply with health, safety and environmental regulations.

Key Responsibilities

• Safety monitoring: Conducting regular site inspections to ensure safe working practices across all areas as well as monitoring contractors and workers.
• Safety enforcement: Implementing health and safety practices to meet health and safety regulations.
• Risk assessments: Based off of inspections and monitoring asses the likeliness of risks on sites.
• Incident management: Lead investigations into accidents or other potential health and safety incidents.
• Safety training: Deliver site inductions and safety talks/training to workers.
• Documentation and reporting: Maintain health and safety documentation such as site safety plans.

Essential Skills

• Analytical skills: Skilled at analysing potential hazards in high-risk environments as well as analysing health and safety information.
• Risk assessment: Ability to carry out detailed risk assessments regarding health and safety.
• Attention to detail: attention to detail whilst carrying out site inspections and monitoring the health and safety of workers.
• Communication skills: Ability to use communication skills to encourage safe behaviour as well as teach workers about health and safety.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations: Strong understanding of the UK health and safety regulations and laws.

Qualifications and Training

Degrees in occupational safety, construction management, engineering or environmental science are relevant to this field.

Starting in roles like HSE assistant, site supervisor with safety duties or warehouse/port operations roles with health and safety oversight.

Safety, health and environment technician level 3 apprenticeship is equal to A levels and could be a good way to earn experience in the field before getting higher qualifications.

NEBOSH general certificate is required by most employers, IOSH managing safely, first aid at work is also often required. Other relevant but not required certifications include NEBOSH construction or environmental certificate and ISO 45001 lead auditor.
