Key Responsibilities
• Policy research and analysis: Monitor government policies on renewable energy and ports, track policy developments that may impact the port.
• Advising and developing port policies: Using the knowledge gained through research and analysis, policy advisors develop the port policies and offer expert advice during this process.
• Communication: Preparing briefings and reports for stakeholders and other groups of people involved to inform them of policy-related issues.
• Policy implementation: Policy advisors assist with the implementation of policies by tracking their progress and effectiveness.

Essential Skills
• Communication: The ability to communicate complex/technical policy information in a way that is easy for stakeholders to understand
• Policy knowledge: A strong understanding of UK energy, marine and infrastructure policies
• Research skills: Ability to conduct research into UK policies and regulations and analyse it
• Critical thinking: The ability to assess the implications that policies and port developments have on each other
• Report writing: The ability to write concise documents regarding port policy for both internal and external audiences
Qualifications and Training
A Bachelor's degree in a relevant field such as public policy, environmental studies, marine or transport policy, or law. Whilst not required a Master's degree in planning, policy or environmental law is useful.
Starting in roles that require less experience, such as policy researcher or planning assistant allows you to gain work experiences. Some companies also have graduate schemes that help you gain experience.
The Policy Officer level 4 apprenticeship is equivalent to higher national certificate (HNC) and typically lasts 15 months, combines on the job training with formal qualifications.
PIEMA/MIEMA for environmental impact, PRINCE2 project management useful for managing policy related projects, NEBOSH environmental management certificate.
