Key Responsibilities
• Site supervision: Supervise the on-site construction activities at the port and distribution sections.
• Coordination: Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors and suppliers as well as construction workers.
• Quality assurance: Conduct inspections and quality checks to ensure the construction meets the right standards.
• Scheduling: Tracking the construction process and dealing with potential delays whilst sticking to a construction schedule.
• Health and safety: Enforce necessary health and safety standards on site.

Essential Skills
• Communication and leadership skills: Effective at leading a team and communicating effectively to construction site workers.
• Spatial awareness: In order to work safely in on a dangerous construction site you must be aware of your surroundings.
• Technical knowledge: A good understanding of the construction processes necessary to build port and distribution infrastructure.
• Problem solving: Ability to make well-thought-out decisions and solve problems that occur on the construction sites
• Health, safety and environmental knowledge: a strong understanding of site safety regulations and environmental regulations.
• Planning and scheduling skills: Ability to interpret and adjust schedules and plans to efficiently complete the construction process.
Qualifications and Training
A degree is not always needed but can be useful if it is in construction management, civil engineering or project management. Level 3 or 4 diploma or NVQ in construction supervision, civil engineering or site management.
Start off in roles that require less experience, such as a construction worker or assistant site supervisor, to gain the work experience needed to become a construction supervisor.
Lots of professionals get into construction-based careers through apprenticeships. To become a construction supervisor, start with an Advanced apprenticeship (level 3) in construction or a Higher apprenticeship (level 4/5) in construction management. These allow you to gain work experience whilst you earn your qualification.
The CSCS card (Construction Skills Certificate Scheme)and environment is essential. SMSTS (site management safety training scheme) and SSSTS (site supervisor safety training scheme) are recommended but not always required.
