Welder and Fabricator

A Welder and Fabricator is responsible for fabricating, assembling and repairing metal structures essential for port infrastructure, storage facilities, and transportation systems.

They do this by using heat and specialized equipment to join metal and other materials.

Key Responsibilities

• Structural Welding and Fabrication: To weld and assemble port-related infrastructure, such as steel frameworks, docks, piers etc.
• Safety and Quality Compliance: To follow welding codes, standards and safety protocols, as well as conducting quality inspections to check for problems.
• Maintenance work: To perform routine maintenance and emergency repairs on port structures and equipment.

Essential Skills

• Technical welding skills: Precision and quality control, understanding different metal materials, proficiency in welding techniques.
• Reading blueprints and drawings: The ability to interpret and understand technical drawings and schematics to ensure accurate work is done.
• Hand-eye coordination: This is necessary to maintain precise control of the welding torch and other equipment.
• Following instructions: The ability to follow and successfully execute the instructions given to you.
• Time management: Completing Welding jobs efficiently whilst maintaining a high-quality work standard.

Qualifications and Training

To qualify for an intermediate apprenticeship you'll require some GCSE's including English and Maths, for an advanced apprenticeship aim for 5 GCSE' at grades 9 to 4 including English and Maths.

You can enrol in a welding course at a college, common courses include: Level 1 Certificate in Welding, Level 2 Diploma in Engineering (Welding & Fabrication), Level 3 Diploma in Fabrication and Welding Engineering.

A Welding apprenticeship allows you to work and earn money whilst you learn. Common courses include: Level 2 General Welder Apprenticeship, Level 3 Metal Fabricator Apprenticeship.

BS EN ISO 9606 provided by TWI (the welding institute), City & Guilds or private welding schools. CSWIP (Certification Scheme for Welding & Inspection Personnel) offered by TWI. NVQ Level 2 and 3 in Welding and Fabrication.
