Key Responsibilities
• Port operations management: Supervise loading and unloading activities, coordinate vessel arrivals and ensure port equipment and infrastructure meet operational requirements.
• Logistics: Develop and maintain logistics schedules to support project targets.
• Team and contractor coordination: Leading a team of port operators, logistics staff and subcontractors.
• Safety: Ensure port operations comply with health and safety laws and environmental standards.

Essential Skills
• Project management: ability to manage port projects, including managing timelines and resources for the project.
• Leadership skills: ability to lead teams comprised of different roles such as port workers, shipping agents and logistic coordinators, strong communication skills.
• Safety knowledge: knowledge and commitment to necessary health and safety regulations.
• Digital skills: ability to use logistics and port management software, such as SAP or port community systems.
• Problem solving: ability to calmly and efficiently solve any problems that may occur whilst managing the port.
Qualifications and Training
A degree in Maritime studies/maritime transportation, logistics and supply chain management, business administration or engineering (civil, mechanical, industrial or marine) is necessary. A relevant masters degree, such as an MBA in logistics or an MSc in Maritime operations, would also be useful, but is not necessary.
Gain work experience: start in operational roles such as port operator, logistics coordinator, shipping assistant or marine traffic controller and work your way up to port manager.
Management apprenticeships can provide relevant work experience that applies to this job, but finding an apprenticeship specific to pot management may prove difficult.
Health and safety certifications such as NEBOSH and OSHA, and project management certifications such as PMP and PRINCE2.
