Key Responsibilities
• Sourcing equipment and materials: Finding and evaluating the necessary equipment to operate the port and distribution sector.
• Procurement of Port and Logistics services: Source and negotiate contracts for services needed at the port, such as stevedores.
• Contract and vendor management: Develop and manage contracts with vendors such as shipping lines and port service providers.
• Budget and cost management: Ensure procurement activities stay within the logistics budget.
• Keeping records: Maintain procurement records using the right digital systems.

Essential Skills
• Analytical skills: Ability to analyse data such as supplier data, market trends and performance reports.
• Contract management: Strong skills when it comes to drafting important contracts for services.
• Negotiation and communication skills: Ability to communicate and negotiate with vendors in the process of securing goods and services.
• Cost control and budgeting: Ability to manage large procurement budgets and stay within said budget.
• Risk management: The ability to identify any potential supply chain risks.
Qualifications and Training
A relevant degree, such as, supply chain management, logistics, business administration or engineering. A masters in a relevant field, such as supply chain or energy, can also be beneficial but is optional.
Start in roles that require less experience, such as, procurement buyer, logistics or supply chain analyst, or project procurement assistant, to gain relevant work experience.
Procurement apprenticeships combine on-the-job training with formal qualifications, for example, those offered by the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS).
Not required but useful, CIPS (Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply), APICS/CSCP for supply chain knowledge, NEBOSH for health and safety, PMP or PRINCE2 for project management.
