Civil Engineer

A Civil Engineer working in planning a port and distribution site is a professional responsible for planning and designing the infrastructure of the project, such as the construction of roads and buildings.

Key Responsibilities

• Site assessment: Viewing and analysing potential sites to determine whether or not they are good enough to be used.
• Infrastructure design: Plan and develop detailed designs for the port and distribution infrastructure.
• Regulation compliance: Ensuring compliance with marine and environmental regulations, as well as preparing the necessary construction documentation.
• Project management and coordination: Coordinate teams made up of different types of engineers, such as civil, marine, and environmental.

Essential Skills

• Structural design: The ability and knowledge to correctly design port and distribution infrastructure, such as quay walls.
• Risk management: The ability to identify potential risks during the planning of the project and dealing with them accordingly.
• Software knowledge: Understanding of the technical software used by civil engineers, such as AutoCAD Civil 3D.
• Health, Safety and Environmental knowledge: Understanding of the health, safety and environmental regulations and ensuring the infrastructure complies with these regulations.
• Time management: Ability to handle tight schedules and meet important deadlines on time.

Qualifications and Training

A BEng (Bachelor of Engineering degree) is required to get into these courses. Most universities look for maths and physics a levels a MEng (master of Engineering) is not required but is preferred for individuals looking to achieve Chartership later in their career.

You can gain work experience by completing an industrial placement year at university, or through internships during your university years.

Graduate role: civil engineering firms and consultancy’s often have graduate role opportunities for individuals who just graduated, you can become a graduate civil engineer at one of these companies and begin to work towards professional registration with the Institution of Civil Engineers.

There is the level 3 Civil Engineering Technician Apprenticeship for foundational skills, the level 6 Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship combines a university degree with on-the-job training.

Chartered Engineer (CEng) status, engineering technician (engtech).
