Marine Engineer

A Marine Engineer is a professional whose role here focuses on designing, analysing and optimising port infrastructure as well as vessel operation.

Key Responsibilities

• Engineering and Design planning: Design or modify port infrastructure such as docks, piers, breakwaters and storage facilities.
• Research: Conduct feasibility studies on port infrastructure for handling renewable energy components.
• Environmental and regulatory compliance: Ensure that port operations comply with IMO (International Maritime Organisation) regulations, as well as local environmental laws and renewable energy policies.
• Communication with other parties: Collaborate with government agencies, renewable energy companies and port authorities.

Essential Skills

• Technical engineering skills: Knowledge of port infrastructure design and marine engineering, as well as knowledge of hydrodynamics and fluid mechanics.
• Project management skills: Ability to communicate with other professionals working on the project.
• Software and technical tools: Ability to use the technology and software to design port infrastructure and analyse geographical data.
• Environmental knowledge: Understanding maritime laws and regulations and using environmental knowledge to create a sustainable port.

Qualifications and Training

A degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering (with marine focus) or Mechanical Engineering.

Look for opportunities to gain relevant work experience through internships with marine engineering firms, port authorities, shipbuilding companies and renewable energy developers. As well as opportunities in graduate programs after you get your degree.

Marine engineering apprenticeships allow you to gain qualifications while also gaining experience. A marine engineering level 3 apprenticeship is equivalent to A levels.

Gaining certificates such as the Chartered Engineer (CEng), STCW Certification or the HSE Offshore Safety Certification will boost your resume.
