Project Manager

A Project Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the research and planning phase of the port and distribution sector.

Key Responsibilities

• Project planning: developing project plans for port and distribution infrastructure and operations.
• Team coordination: managing different roles and teams that will contribute to constructing and operating the port, for example engineers.
• Budget management: preparing and managing a budget and ensuring the project stays within the budget.
• Risk management: identifying potential risks during the planning process and coming up with ways to counter them.

Essential Skills

Leadership skills: the ability to successfully lead cross-functional teams and coordinate them during the planning process of the project
• Problem solving: the ability to identify and solve problems that may occur whilst planning and researching the project.
• Time management: planning things efficiently and managing time in a way that allows you to meet the project deadlines.
• Contract knowledge: ability to read and understand contracts needed during the planning of the port.
• Budget management: ability to stick to a large and complicated budget.

Qualifications and Training

A relevant Bachelor's degree, such as Engineering, logistics, maritime studies or project management. A master's in renewable energy, supply chain, project management or infrastructure is useful but not always required.

Gain relevant work experience by starting in logistics or assistant positions and move into renewable energy once you have more experience.

There are Project management apprenticeships at different levels, such as a Level 4 Associate Project Manager Apprenticeship, often lasting 24 months, and a Level 6 Project Manager Integrated Degree Apprenticeship, which leads to a Project Management degree.

Project Management Professional (PMP) or PRINCE2, Certified Supply Chain Professional (CSCP), HSE (health, safety and environmental) certifications such as NEBOSH.
