Local Government Officer

A Local Government Officer provides support to elected council representatives and to other members of staff within the institution. Your day-to-day activities will vary from developing policy and strategy on the local area to presenting findings to committees through written and verbal reports.

You will also assist councillors in achieving their targets.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with policy: Assisting councillors with local policy is a crucial part of the role. This will help shape local decisions, programmes and services at the city and district level. Additionally, you will help ensure the services are delivered efficiently, such as public transport, social care and bin collection. In the case of renewable energy schemes, you will be the link from the company to the local authority to help implement these schemes into the community. (Community engagement is also key) Therefore, you will need a good knowledge of environmental laws both locally and nationally.
• Budget management and department coordination: As a local government officer, you will plan and engage with a variety of local government departments. Therefore, it is essential to gain repour with these various agencies to ensure the department's resources are distributed effectively and communicate this with other departments to provide the integrated public service the local community deserves.

Essential Skills

• Planning and Organising: This is a key skill in this job as you will need to remain on top of the day-to-day workload. Your workload will range from assisting with policy to reporting findings on local schemes to councillors and committees. Therefore, time management and multitasking are essential. An element of self-project management is also needed as you will be responsible for aiding councillors with local budgets and distributing resources for public projects while also working across departments and being a point of contact for external agencies.
• Communication: This is arguably the most important skill a local government officer can possess. Whether this is written or verbal, you will need to report findings from data analysis to committees and explain the successes of these policies through verbal presentations and written reports. Additionally, Interpersonal skills are key to this role, whether this is with the local community or your elected councillors, which will build your personal community awareness and effectiveness to work across various sectors of local government.

Qualifications and Training

• 5 GCSE’s then 2/3 A levels.
