Key Responsibilities
• Performing assessments: This forms the basis for contributing to the development of policies for the employer. This assesses how effective they are and judge the impact on sustainability. For example, this could be a waste reduction practice or new ways of producing more efficient energy.
• Provide training: With expert knowledge on sustainability practices, officers will be tasked to train other staff on how to implement and promote these procedures.
• Liaising with stakeholders: The community engagement aspect of the role involves liaising with stakeholders in and outside the company. This can include: governmental departments and the local authority, residents and environmental non-governmental organisations. This acts as a valuable reference point when judging the environmental impact.

Essential Skills
• Critical thinking/creativity within problem solving: Being analytical and showing innovation is key to this role. To ensure efficiency is sustained then this will require you to come up with original scientific solutions using your expertise.
• Verbal and written communication: The role will involve both internal and external contacts. This can include local government and environmental Non-government organisations (NGO’s). You must give and act on feedback.
• Active listening: This is an important skill in any role. Paying close attention to co-workers shows respect and will earn you respect among peers.
• Leadership: Direct others through your scientific expertise to promote sustainable practices
• Scientific and environmental knowledge: Expertise in the green sector and sustainability practices.
• Interpersonal skills: You will need to interact effectively with others and build connections to ensure policies are implemented and efficiency is always achieved.
Qualifications and Training
Educational Background: Four or five GCSEs with a grade C or higher. One pathway is to choose sciences at A-level. For instance, Biology and Chemistry would cover ecology and environmental sciences, which are key for this role. You can then study a range of subjects at undergraduate level, including:
• Biology
• Chemistry
• Ecology
• Agricultural science
• Environmental science
• Geography

This allows you to get hands on experience and earn an income while you also learn in the classroom. Indeed says a good choice would be to look at an environmental practitioner degree apprenticeship. This will take 5 years which is longer than a 3-year undergraduate but you get the qualification while getting paid.
