Health and Safety Officer

A Health and Safety Officer plays a crucial role in ensuring the workplace is safe. This is through the following of regulations.

As a Health and Safety Officer, you must develop, implement and oversee safety procedures/programmes to protect employers, those visiting the site and ensure environmental regulations are upheld to avoid hazards.

Key Responsibilities

• Abide by Health and Safety Regulations: Ensure you keep up to date with local and state level regulations and ensure the implementation of any new legislation. It is your job to implement these practices and ensure your company complies with this too.

• Lead training: Conduct and organise programs for employees so they are familiar with safety procedures. This will help create a culture of safety and communication in the company as everyone collectively is aware of what procedures to follow. It is your job to maintain this discipline and efficiency. Additionally, you must ensure that there are contingency plans in case something goes wrong such as a workplace accident. This can be arranging first aid training or teaching evacuation procedures.

• Policy Development: As a Health and Safety Officer, you must oversee that the procedures you implement are being followed. You must monitor this through evaluation of the programs and make recommendations for improvement if necessary. This can range from common day to day practices to severe incidents.

• Collaboration and Communication: As a Health and Safety Officer you will work with insurance companies and management during investigations. This is to make sure the correct action happens afterwards and determine how it will not reoccur. You will also be a point of contact for employees who may have concerns about health and safety. Furthermore, you will also need to collaborate with external health bodies to stay informed about new policies to ensure implementation.

Essential Skills

• Risk Assessment: Conduct thorough risk assessments to identify hazards in the workplace. This will require you to possess attention to detail to ensure compliance with safety standards and careful monitoring of policies, so no details are overlooked.
• Problem Solving: Analysis of incidents and practices to identify the root causes. After, develop corrective actions to prevent relapses.
• Leadership and Communication: You will be a point of reference for employees who will look up to you for advice about Health and Safety procedures. You will lead a culture of safety throughout the company and inspire others to adhere to protocol. Communication of these policies is also crucial, as you will need to deliver safety training.

Qualifications and Training

In School you would need 5 GCSE’s including English and Maths at a minimum C grade to then progress into A levels or a Level 3 college course:
• Engineering (Full Time) - Coleg Gwent
• Mechanical Engineering - Pembrokeshire College
• Engineering Apprenticeships in Wales | TSW Apprenticeships
• An Undergraduate degree in the following would provide you with the skillset needed:
• Business management
• Engineering
