Interior Designer
Interior Designers specialise in designing briefs that suit individual clients’ budget and design wishes. This is significant in the green sector as sustainability practices need to be integrated into thinking during renovation projects.
This will also involve energy efficiency solutions such as the use of natural light and practices that help reduce the carbon footprint.
Key Responsibilities
• Advise clients: Designers must use their expertise to advise clients on how it is best to use a space. Additionally, this may include consultation on designs to clients where you will be expected to meet their aesthetic goals through regular meetings.
• Budget responsibility: Designers must ensure that their plans stay within the budget. This may involve negotiating prices for materials and labour. Therefore, establishing good relationships and networking would be helpful here.
• Concept Development: This involves creating a mood board for clients, then presenting them to see if it meets their expectations. This will also require a selection of materials, colour patterns, and how best to utilise the space.

Essential Skills
• Planning and organising: Project management is often a key skill of being an interior designer, as well as organisation. This role may involve overseeing multiple projects at one time, so coordination and efficiency are crucial for success.
• Creativity and innovation: A strong sense of vision and creativity is crucial to being an interior designer. The job is to make use of the space while ensuring it is aesthetically pleasing for the client. In the green sector, natural light is key as skylights are often used in the design to harness solar energy.
• Sustainability awareness: This is becoming an increasingly important part of the job. Designers now need to integrate green solutions with their design to meet the expectations of both the client and the environmental movement. This requires knowledge of energy-efficient solutions and knowledge of how to sustain this.
• Understanding of regulations: A sufficient understanding of design and building regulations is important to ensure that the designs line with health and safety standards as well as legal requirements.

To get on a design foundational course, you would need at least 2 A-levels, with one of them being Art or you could go to do an equivalent Level 3 course in Art and Design.
• For most courses at Level 3, you need 5 GCSEs in an Art-related subject, English and Maths at a C grade.
