Geotechnical Surveyor

A Geotechnical Surveyor tests the soil and seabed condition for safe construction. Their work is critical in the early stages of development projects, helping engineers, architects and builders understand the conditions of the site they’re working with

Key Responsibilities

• Conducting site investigations: conduct site assessments and drill boreholes to take samples of soil and rock.
• Soil and Material Samplings: soil testing and rock and material analysis.
• Laboratory Testing of Soil: strength, permeability and consolidation testing.
• Geotechnical Risk Assessment: Hazard identification and analysis of the level and movement of groundwater beneath the surface to ensure it won't affect the project, especially foundations
• Monitoring and supervision: construction supervision and ongoing monitoring of the project.
• Compliance with regulations: ensuring compliance with geotechnical work complies and sustainability considerations.

Qualifications and Training

A minimum of GCSEs, or equivalent, in English and Maths

A completion of technical training course in Geotechnical engineering or surveying is useful, this helps teach the practise and academic skills needed for the job

It's possible to become a geotechnical surveyor through apprenticeships, which will combine on-the-job training with academic education. The Welsh Government: has introduced a range of new degree apprenticeships in Civil Engineering and Quantity Surveying, which allow experience in the industry
New degree apprenticeships announced to help build the Wales of the future | GOV.WALES
The University of South Wales and the Network75 scheme: These offer apprenticeships in engineering, helping in the pathway towards being a geotechnical surveyor
Professional Academy - University of South Wales

Certifications from recognised bodies helps enhance professional credibility, demonstrate expertise and ensure compliance with industry standards. Chartered Engineer (CEng): this is a prestigious certification that demonstrates advanced competence in engineering which is useful for geotechnical surveyors Certified Professional in Erosion and Sediment Control (CPESC): this is designed for professionals involved in soil erosion and sediment control, which is often a key part of geotechnical surveying in construction projects.
Chartered Geologist (CGeol): for surveyors with a background in Geology, this certification is highly respected and demonstrates proficiency in applying geological principles to a wide range of industries, including geotechnical engineering
